Bolt.new helps you build and preview a web app through a conversation with AI. You can start from an idea, then inspect the code and refine the result in the browser.
It is useful for a small product prototype, a client-facing tool or a working demonstration. The most useful first version has one complete flow, such as submitting a request and seeing it saved correctly—not just a good-looking dashboard filled with invented numbers.

The current entry Pro tier starts at 10 million tokens per month, with no daily token limit, public and private projects, and included website hosting. The public comparison lists up to 1 million web requests, a 100 MB file-upload limit and expanded database capacity.
“Unlimited databases” does not mean unlimited storage, traffic or compute. Check the resource allowance and billing period in your activated account before choosing the architecture of a production app.
Paid subscription tokens can roll over for one additional month, making them usable for up to two months in total. Access to rolled-over tokens requires an active paid subscription. Larger Pro token tiers are not automatically included in this offer.
Who it suits
Founders testing a product, agencies creating an interactive demonstration, and developers who want a fast starting point they can inspect. You still need to review security, data handling and integrations before taking real customer information.
A smarter way to use this: focus the AI on the change, not the entire project
As a project grows, repeatedly asking Bolt to reconsider everything can use tokens and disturb code that was already working. Code view lets you narrow its attention.
- Open Code view and identify the component or file involved in the change. Use Plan mode first when you need help understanding the impact without editing code.
- Right-click the relevant file and use Target file. For a small change, select the exact code and choose Ask Bolt so the request includes that section.
- Use Lock file or Lock all for files or directories that should be excluded from the current edit. The
.bolt/ignorefile can also manage excluded context. - Describe the required behaviour and what must remain unchanged. Ask for one focused change, then inspect the diff and test the affected flow.
- Review the targeting and locks before the next task. A file excluded from context can hide an important dependency, so these settings should follow the job rather than remain forgotten forever.
This is particularly useful for a nearly finished app where you need to change a form without redesigning navigation or authentication. It improves the scope of the task; it is not a security mechanism or a guarantee that no other behaviour can change.
Bolt’s older Discussion Mode has been replaced by Plan Mode. Use the current interface rather than searching for an old tutorial’s button.
Tokens, hosting and extra usage
Tokens are units of model input and output, not a count of apps you can build. Large files, long conversations and repeated generations can consume more than a short, targeted request.
Use the token dashboard and version history. Restoring a version is not a promise to refund AI usage, reverse external emails or restore a production database. Keep data backups separately.
External model APIs, payment services, databases or other providers can charge independently. Hosting allowances also have limits; “the app is included” does not make every future visitor or AI request free.
First setup
Redeem on the correct account, check the token tier and renewal date, then build a small test with dummy data. Test on mobile and as more than one user. Verify database permissions and server-side handling of secrets before publishing.
Do not put a privileged database key or payment secret into browser code. Test an empty state, an error and an unauthorised request, not only the successful preview.
